The results from the 2016 Eaters Survey are in – I hadn’t commented on it yet since I was out on vacation last week and didn’t really dig down into the results until yesterday. (more…)

So far, no correlation between breath acetone and blood ketones

This entry is part 47 of 131 in the series Ketogenic Diet

For the last 40 days I’ve been checking my blood ketone levels (using a Nova Max and horribly expensive test strips) and at the same time checking my breath acetone levels using a Ketonix. (more…)

New US Dietary Guidelines out; not much changed, I’m apparently still dying

The methodology used to develop and update this Pattern continues to be grounded in that of the food guides USDA has developed for the last 30 years.

“we didn’t cause the deaths of millions of Americans by telling them to eat more carbs, so we’re going to continue the same way. But you should limit added sugar. Saturated fat and salt are still going to kill you”. In Appendix 7 they list out the new nutritional goals. Let’s see, for me they’re recommending:

  • 2200 calories
  • only 56g of protein
  • 130g of carbohydrates
  • 48 to 85g of total fat with less than 24g of saturated fat despite the evidence that saturated fat has nothing to do with heart disease
  • There’s no recommendation anymore on cholesterol but they want to you know they still think it’s bad (even though the previous link says it’s not)
  • I should keep my sugar below 55g a day
  • RDI of 2300mg of sodium

So… apparently I’m dead or dying because the only one I adhere to is <55g of sugar a day. Goodbye cruel world or something.

Recommended Reading: Why We Get Fat: And What to Do About It

I read Gary Taubs’ earlier book Good Calories Bad Calories a few weeks ago, I followed it up with his newer book Why We Get Fat: And What to Do About It. While it doesn’t have the same breadth of information as Good Calories it’s more clearly delivered and easier for non-technical-medial people to understand. Honestly I think it’s one of the better introductions to a ketogenic/high fat low carb diet that I’ve seen yet. Here’s some of the stuff I “took home” from the book. (more…)

Ketogenic Update: Don’t Eat Carbohydrates

Ok, so this is fairly obvious, talking about a ketogenic diet where you have to keep all carbohydrates below 30g/day, but you should not decide “hey, I’ve had a good 2 1/2 week run, I’ll go out to dinner with my wife to Texas Roadhouse and get the Cactus Blossom and some grilled chicken and I’ll be fine” I say that because that’s what I did. (more…)
