  • Natalie is doing 3 Keto Chow a day – some tips from the pros.
  • There is an Instagram giveaway with en187 go like and follow.
  • Carnivore conference-thoughts, Dave put up slides with the number of nutrients in plant products on one side of the screen and on the other side of the screen the nutrients of meat. It was crazy how many plants you would need to eat to get the same nutrients as the meat.
  • More about Carnivore conference
  • Low Carb Denver, way cool and fun we met some rad people
  • Videos with Nurse Cindy
  • Are headaches caused by carb withdrawal?
  • Paula is using exogenous ketones to help her with migraines, that is kinda cool.

Keto Chow on the Pacific Crest Trail

Guest post by Jessie.

Many of the people reading this post might enjoy hiking, some others might like camping… but would you want to hike and camp for five months straight? Living out of your backpack as you trek through some of the most amazing and treacherous terrains this country has to offer, sleeping in a tent nearly every night after a grueling 25–30 mile hike each day?

In 2017, I decided that walking 2,650+ miles from Mexico to Canada on the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) sounded like my idea of “fun”. So, I quit my job and became a ketogenic thru-hiker.

Eating keto in the backcountry is no easy feat: there’s no refrigeration, no electricity, no kitchen… There’s a reason why keto hiking (especially long-distance keto thru-hiking) hadn’t been well documented; there were no accounts from successful thru-hikes as of 2017. I was told “you won’t make it 100 miles”, and bets were placed on whether I’d give up keto (or give up the hike) when I “finally came to [my] senses” and realized carbs were necessary for endurance endeavors.

Next Mile Meals Hiking the Pacific Crest Trail

They were so very wrong. Not only is keto hiking and backpacking absolutely possible, it’s our preferred way to backpack, lightening the load by carrying calorically dense food and providing stable, predictable energy to power up the mountains and thru the trek.

Crucial to the success of a keto thru-hike is the food chosen each day: what options do we have that are nutritionally-complete, shelf-stable, light-weight, and easy to pack? Clearly, Keto Chow does the trick! 2,650+ miles later, here’s how a daily breakfast of Keto Chow fueled the miles, and what other food options exist for ketogenic hikers, hunters, and backpackers looking to take their keto diet on the trail.

Keto Chow in the “Front Country”

I may have been the one hiking, but my partner, Christopher, was Mission Control at home, making sure my meals were sent ahead of me along the way, including my daily dose of Keto Chow. At home, we store our Keto Chow in large glass jars, and scoop straight from the jar to bottle or blender. On our first keto treks, we tried a portable version of the same method, using one large Ziploc with a scoop and a few days of Keto Chow. Handling the scoop with dirty hands and storing it in the bag risked spoiling the Keto Chow, but without the scoop and with no scale, it was extremely hard to accurately measure one portion.

On multi-day trips, our big food breakthrough was packing each day’s food portions into separate clear plastic bags, which made it easy to pull out that day’s food in the morning and pack the bear can away. Christopher stuck with this system for my PCT supplies, so he portioned out Keto Chow to pack it with each day’s food.

Christopher's Food Prep

Christopher prepping a few hundred miles worth of food re-supply boxes to ship to trail towns along the PCT

A Ziploc snack-sized bag was a perfect fit for one meal of Keto Chow with powdered cream. Christopher weighed out a full scoop of Keto Chow, added heavy cream powder and MCT powder, zipped it up, and shook it to mix the powders up. (When we tested these trailside, we had issues with the cream and MCT powder clumping up, and found that pre-mixing the dry powders helped everything mix smoothly.) When new flavors were available over that summer, he sent me samples to try and wrote the names on the bags in Sharpie. (Chocolate Peanut Butter still came out on top.)

Recipe/Macros

  1. One scoop of Keto Chow 2.0 (Chocolate Peanut Butter)
  2. 10g MCT powder
  3. 30g heavy cream powder
  4. Add water, shake to blend, and enjoy!
  • Calories: 450
  • Protein: 34g
  • Fat: 31g
  • Net carbs: 7.5g

A note on carb count: the high daily calorie burn of backpacking and thru-hiking seemed to give us extra headroom for net carbs, so the relatively high amount of carbs in these breakfasts wasn’t an issue for us. If you’re looking to reduce the carb count, swap the powdered heavy cream for avocado oil; it’s available in single-serve 1–2 oz portions online or you can carry it in a small sealed container like a water bottle.

Keto Chow in the Backcountry

Pacific Crest TrailOur preferred method of making Keto Chow at home is with our immersion blender, but as much as we’d love to take that on the trail with us, the backcountry is lacking in a few key requirements to make that happen. So, we transition from electrical to mechanical when on the trail.

To keep it simple, you can just pack a basic blender bottle, which fulfills the basic requirements of “insert Keto Chow → add liquid → shake →  drink”. However, if you’re anything like us, every ounce matters when you’re carrying it on your back. To lighten the load, we use a 1 qt Ziploc Container and Wire Whisk Balls. The Ziploc container weights a bit less than a standard blender bottle and can also store a stove and fuel canister while hiking. We recommend purchasing a few of each in case they break or get lost—when your only containers go out-of-commission on trail, it’s not easy to MacGyver a solution mid-trek (cue flashback when I had to mix my breakfast shake with my hair comb for a week when my whisk ball was left behind at a trail town).

Timing-wise, I prepared my shake the night before so it was ready for breakfast the next day. The Pacific Crest Trail crosses a wide variety of terrain—desert, alpine, grassy plains, etc…—but most nights dipped low enough to keep the shakes around “fridge temperature” until the next morning (even in the desert). If the overnight temps were too high, I waited until the next morning, found a cold stream to filter water from, and drank my shakes on-the-go.

Next Mile Meals + Keto ChowIn the Sierra Nevada, I had the benefit of snow (perhaps the only positive of trudging through frozen snowfields for weeks at a time). This meant I could make my shake, bury it in a nearby snowbank, and have a frosty meal ready for me the next morning. I made sure to cleanly seal the container and bury it deep so that animals couldn’t find it, and I used an Ursak or a Bear Vault to prevent critter intrusions.

I’d drink our shake while breaking down camp (usually alongside a strong cup of coffee), and scrub out the container with filtered water and a rag. Every few days, I’d give it a good soapy wash to keep it clean, pick up my next post office maildrop from Christopher with its resupply of Keto Chow, and head back onto the trail.

Start the Day with Keto Chow
End the Day with Next Mile Meals

Keto Chow provided a much-needed dose of healthy nutrients each day, but as the hike planning progressed, I found myself struggling to find other keto-friendly food options, especially when craving a warm hearty dinner each night. Conventional “just add water” backpacking meal options are stuffed full with cheap carbs—rice, pasta, potatoes—because they’re inexpensive to make and shelf-stable. With my mornings kicking off with Keto Chow but unable to find an evening bookend for our meals, I made my own dinners from six trail-tested recipes and when I returned home, Christopher and I launched Next Mile Meals!

Eating Keto on the Trail

On the Next Mile Meals site, we’ve made shelf-stable freeze-dried meals available to every keto hiker, hunter, and outdoor adventurer to fuel their own treks. We’re also an educational resource: we did the math on why keto backpacking is perhaps the best weight-savings strategy, and even posted the DEXA scans of what ketogenic hiking does to one’s body to encourage other hikers wanting to stay keto while out adventuring.

Now a year into the company’s launch, we get emails nearly every day from customers who thought their backcountry hobbies were off-limits to them because of their diet or health restrictions. With Keto Chow and Next Mile Meals, no one has to choose between their health or their hobbies anymore. You can have your (sugar-free) cake and eat it too!

Happy Hiking!
Jessie & Christopher

Flavor of the week: Get 10% off the Vanilla 21 meal packs between Mar 11 – Mar 17

For the next week, you can get 10% off the 21 meal “week” size of Vanilla Keto Chow. Vanilla is a really versatile flavor and lends itself to all kinds of hacking and tomfoolery =) A few months ago, in a thread in the KetoChow subreddit, we had a bit of awesomeness from MrCharismatist about Vanilla:

What’ll really blow your mind is that all you need is Vanilla and some bottles of Torani sugar free syrup.

Vanilla + Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough syrup is fantastic.

Vanilla + Orange tastes strangely like Froot Loops in a good way.

Vanilla + Red Raspberry is dead on “Red Snow Cone”.

As to Chicken Soup, there’s no need to overthink it and boil water in a kettle to a certain temp. As long as it’s still warm after you put cream or butter in it, it’s fine. My kitchen sink is shockingly hot and I just use it straight.

I’ve got six weeks of chocolate, sevenish of chicken Soup left. When I reorder it’s going to be all Vanilla and Chicken Soup.

To which LavernicaDeLuca replied:

Absolutely agree with the vanilla is all you need. It’s an amazing base for adding flavors. I love adding peanut butter to vanilla, it’s a dream come true for a peanut butter fanatic like me, I just use PB as the oil, it’s amazing. And of course, vanilla is great on its own too. It’s definitely my favorite KC.

There’s also this entire thread just about Vanilla Keto Chow and how versatile it is, give it a read. There’s even more fun, check out the flavor reviews of 2.1 Vanilla!

Speaking of reviews, you should check out our store reviews on Google, and the reviews of Keto Chow. Here’s a “taste”:

I bought 4 different flavors so I could rotate them. So easy to just scoop amount out and reseal. It’s nice to save some money too!

Here’s another, should be noted that I publish all of the reviews that come in – bad or good – as they are, typos intact. The only ones I remove are spam posts from people wanting you to buy pills to “enhance performance” and such. This review is from our Facebook Page:

OMG!!! BEST STUFF I’VE EVER TASTED. Ive tried other brands .. DOES NOT COMPARE .. just awesome and so filling.

Results of the Keto Chow 3rd party blind taste test

I’ve had these results for some time but needed to get them into a usable format for public consumption. We did the taste test in early January for use in an upcoming video promotion we shot in February. I needed to strip out the references to the names of the competing products since I’m not going to promote nor disparage the other products. I’ve met (often on multiple occasions) the creators of all of the products we tested against, and I don’t want to be “that guy” (also if they want to do a taste test, they’ll have to pay for it themselves =). I prefer to treat others the way I expect to be treated and I wouldn’t like Keto Chow called out in that way. Besides, I genuinely think there is enough room in the space for all of us. Our biggest hurdle isn’t competitors, it’s getting people past their terrible experience with “diet weight loss shakes” in their past and giving us a try.

The big takeaways from the test:

  • In a 3rd party blind taste test, participants were asked to try 5 of the leading Keto Shakes.
  • Keto Chow outperformed all of the competitors in appearance, flavor, texture, and overall impression.
  • More participants ranked Keto Chow #1 than any other tested brand.
  • In fact, participants were significantly more likely to recommend Keto Chow to friends or family than all other tested brands.

The other cool thing they confirmed was that Keto Chow with sucralose tastes “more natural” than products using Stevia, Erythritol, Monk Fruit, or a combination. Which is why we use Sucralose for most of our flavors. You can read the full results of the taste tests, including the verbatim responses of each person as to WHY they rated each drink the way they did over on this page.

Flavor of the week: Get 10% off the Natural Strawberry 21 meal packs between Mar 4 – Mar 10

For the next week, you can get 10% off the 21 meal “week” size of Natural Strawberry 2.1. We introduced the Natural Strawberry as a way to test out using monk fruit as a sweetener instead of sucralose. Occasionally we’ll get someone that likes the concept of Keto Chow but personally is avoiding certain sweeteners – this gives them the option of doing so. Monk Fruit does not taste the same as sucralose though; it’s far better than stevia in the taste testing we did, but it does only work with certain flavors and strawberry was a good fit. Check out the flavor reviews of 2.1 Natural Strawberry!

Speaking of reviews, you should check out our store reviews on Google, and the reviews of Keto Chow. Here’s a “taste”:

I called in because I had questions about my order. My customer service rep was so nice and had great helpful tips. I could tell he loves the product and was super helpful!

Here’s another review, it should be noted that I publish all of the reviews that come in – bad or good – as they are, typos intact. The only ones I remove are spam posts from people wanting you to buy pills to “enhance performance” and such.

I love the yummy flavors of Keto Chow. I have not tried one that I haven’t liked. I am so excited that the sample meals of the new flavors are back in stock. I love the thickness and texture of the shakes.

Facebook Live recording from Feb 26, 2019

This week we had a special guest: Amanda of @amandaeatsketo fame as well as many of the recipes that use Keto Chow. In addition to making amazing recipes, she has been working as a medical assistant at Ogden Medical Weight Loss Clinic with Dr. Rohn Rigby where they use ketogenic diets (among other interventions) to help their patients with a wide range is ailments but chiefly to successfully lose weight and regain their health. Here is the high-quality UHD4K recording from the camera:

We also discussed some other stuff:

  • Root Beer Float is on sale this week, 10% off
  • Day 56 of my experiment: 100 days of eating nothing but Keto Chow
  • Where to find the recipes on the Keto Chow site
  • Stephanie wants to know: Can you use almond milk instead of heavy cream for keto chow?
  • Katie asked: Can someone explain keto chow to me. What is it? How do you do it? The benefits?
  • If you have pets or are around people with pets, don’t buy xylitol. If a recipe calls for xylitol and you have pets, use something else.  Erythritol has less of a glycemic effect than xylitol and is not toxic.
  • What to do if Keto Chow is WAY too filling – takes hours to drink.
  • MCT Oil and MCT Oil powder, what are they useful for?
  • DeeAnn ads TrueOrange to the Orange Cream Keto Chow. Anna uses TrueLemon in Vanilla
  • Carrie wants to know How does everyone store their Keto Chow?
  • Beth asks about Keto Chow in carb manager – scans as 4 carbs.

Flavor of the week: Get 10% off the Root Beer Float 21 meal packs between Feb 25 – Mar 3

For the next week, you can get 10% off the 21 meal “week” size of Root Beer Float Keto Chow. Really the only thing missing is the very slight hint of carbonation that’s left over after adding ice cream to root beer, other than that, it’s awfully close! Check out the flavor reviews of Root Beer Float! Or even better, see what people are saying about it on Reddit: Here and Here.

Speaking of reviews, you should check out our store reviews on Google, and the reviews of Keto Chow on our site. Here’s a “taste”:

Finally a shake that feels like part of a successful diet plan.

After years of trying different kinds of protein powders (Ancient Nutrition, Optimum Nutrition, Myprotein) as a meal replacement, I’m really happy that I decided to give ketochow a shot and it’s now a daily meal. I found that my weakness was trying to figure out a lunch meal everyday while on keto which inevitably led me to make bad choices – but that’s no longer the case because of this product.

The biggest observation I have about ketochow is that there is a real emphasis on making sure the flavor and texture is good and drinkable and doesn’t taste artificial. which I can’t say about the other protein powders I’ve had. In those cases it always felt like I’m choking down something unpleasant that faintly tasted like the flavor, but not ketochow.

Samples I’ve liked and have gone on to purchase the 21 meal pack:

  1. Root Beer Float – my first pack that I’ve finished. Agree that it tastes like ice cream in
  2. Banana – The drink I missed the most while on keto is a banana smoothie – this absolutely satisfies that. Somewhere inbetween a banana smoothie and a banana milkshake. Doesn’t taste artificial or “banana candy” like.
  3. Orange Dreamsicle – I just bought a sample of this and WISH WISH WISH I ordered the 21 meal pack. Again, thought it had a chance of being gross but it really does taste like a creamsicle bar! Could easily see myself drinking it daily but going to have to wait until i get through the rest of my 3 month’s supply before I order more.

Still have natural strawberry, chocolate, and salted caramel 21 meal pack which I all thought tasted like a milkshake equivalent.

I’m on close to a month and a half of dieting now on keto and have lost 16 lbs with the help of ketochow. I only have coffee or tea for breakfast, at noon I have a serving of ketochow with cream, it keeps me feeling full and happy until dinner time at 6 where I have a sensible keto dinner of greens and a protein. Really pleased with the product.

Here’s another review, it should be noted that I publish all of the reviews that come in – bad or good – as they are, typos intact. The only ones I remove are spam posts from people wanting you to buy pills to “enhance performance” and such.

Total waste of money. High priced packet of sweetened/aftertaste nothing that one must add their own fat content to. For someone serious about their health, IMO, this would not be the way to go.

Oh wait, that’s one of the few negative reviews we’ve EVER received, it came in right about the same time as that longer review. We consider the need to customize the amount of fat used a FEATURE, guess you can’t make everyone happy. Here’s another positive review =)

Very Happy Camper. As a former Atkins devotee, I have tried every low-carb shake – powder and pre-made – under the sun. My Atkins experience led me to believe a higher fat content was critical to success, which led me to keto. I was told about this product and order two sample packs. THESE ARE THE BEST MEAL REPLACEMENT SHAKES I HAVE EVER TASTED. PERIOD. I’ve subsequently ordered a month’s worth of product – I believe that says it all. Thanks for making the product.

Flavor of the week: Get 10% off the Pumpkin Spice Caramel 21 meal packs between Feb 18 & Feb 24

For the next week, you can get 10% off the 21 meal “week” size of the Pumpkin Spice Caramel 2.1.  Check out the flavor reviews of Pumpkin Spice Caramel.

We sometimes get asked: “what can I do with Keto Chow besides make shakes?” The best place to start is our Keto Chow Recipes page. Here are several that happen to use Pumpkin Spice as an ingredient:

You should check out our store reviews on Google, and the reviews of Keto Chow. We also get a lot of reviews on our Facebook page and on our SubReddit. Here’s a “taste” from a recent reddit post:

I just had my first few sips of my first ever Keto Chow. And I think my head exploded. This is unreal.

I received my snickerdoodle bags yesterday, prepped two bottles and am just now having one for lunch. This snickerdoodle shake is thick and creamy, cinnamon-y. I just can’t believe that this is a protein shake and that this is low carb. I was really hesitant about the cost but now I can realistically see me having these once or twice a day daily. Especially after a co-worker came in and offered me a mocha frappeccino thing with extra whip and I didn’t even flinch. Literally the thought bubbled up “Are you kidding? Have you tried this shake?!?” I even love the texture of the melted ice cream-like creaminess. Ugh, I am just so in love. Snickerdoodle Keto Chow, will you be my valentine??

Excuse me as I order the sample packs PRONTO.

Here’s another review, it should be noted that I publish all of the reviews that come in – bad or good – as they are, typos intact. The only ones I remove are spam posts from people wanting you to buy pills to “enhance performance” and such. This review is ALSO from Reddit.

The straight dope from a straight dope about to try Keto Chow for the first time!

OK folks – the two flavors I brewed up (Salted Caramel and Mocha) have been chilling in the fridge since last night. I’ve got them at work and am about to uncork the first one – Salted Caramel.

Pretty dang cold from the fridge…nice bouquet. I put a bit more water into the Mocha b/c that cup is bigger…

Oh my! Worried a bit as it was passing its way over the tip of my tongue, but that sweetness that hits in the very back of your mouth is SPOT ON!! A bit of a pudding quality to the taste – very smooth. Definite taste of melted ice cream. At no point whatsoever have I felt the hint of a retching instinct. Half way through and I’m craving water – not the Double Gulp of Diet Dew 3 inches from my hand. No aftertaste at all. Just creamy goodness.

Big milestone here – I feel a burp brewing. Protein shake burps are the worst – though this is Keto Chow and not a nasty old primitive protein shake! My sound meter is out of batteries, but I’d put this burp at 17dB. GLORIOUS! A TRIUMPH! Hoping for another because that tasted like three good things.

No goo or globs at the bottom! Delicious from start to finish. I’m going to say that – for it’s intent and purpose – that is the best health promoting / fat defeating shake I’ve ever tasted.

Second burp – half the salt but twice the caramel!!

Follow up – I find my tongue doing that thing they do when you’ve had something yummy and it darts around yer yap looking for any remaining hint of that flavor.

Well done Keto Chow – Well done.
