Base Powder

New Packaging for Keto Chow Base Powder

This entry is part 125 of 131 in the series Ketogenic Diet

We just received the new packaging for the Base Powder with the new logo and the 2.5 version number. What’s changed? The package, that’s it.

Let’s talk about what the Base Powder is:

  • The Base Powder is all of the “esoteric” ingredients in Keto Chow, everything except for protein, flavor, and sweetener. Often these ingredients can be difficult or impossible to locate, especially outside the United States.
  • You take 14g of the Base Powder and add your choice of protein to make Keto Chow.

Ok, so why would you use the Base Powder instead of getting the full mix?

  • The #1 ingredient in Keto Chow is the protein powder. It takes up more volume and weighs more than any other ingredient. Eliminate the protein and suddenly you can fit 5x as many “weeks” in the same shipping package. For international shipping, this is a huge deal. You’d find some protein locally and not have to pay shipping for that.
  • If you don’t like one of the components of the sweetener, protein, or flavor in the full mix; the Base Powder allows you to use whichever protein powder with whatever sweetener you like. Want unflavored protein? Less sweetener? No Sweetener? Just Stevia? Something besides whey protein? The Base Powder is a likely solution for you.
  • Going back to the previous point, we get a lot of varied requests for customized Keto Chow – almost all of them can be covered with the Base Powder. It’s super flexible and allows us to keep the product line simple(er).

Now, the Base Powder isn’t for everyone – if you use it you should be prepared to do a fair amount of math to determine how much protein powder you should use since most protein powders vary on their nutrient profiles. If in doubt, use Cron-o-meter. The Base Powder is in the Cron-o-meter database already, then you’d just add your protein powder to a “recipe” (along with how much fat you’re using) and you’re good to go. The regular full mix is easier to use, especially for new users, but if you have the desire to customize a bit, you can check out the Base Powder

A note about the version number in the Base Powder: The Base Powder for 1.9, 2.0, 2.1, and now 2.5 are nearly identical. We’re even using the same UPC barcode! So, if you have some older Base Powder, don’t get worked up that you don’t have the “latest” version. Now the question arises: why did we keep 2.5 Base Powder nearly identical? With 1.9 we used off-the-shelf protein powder that usually comes with additional thickening agents, flavor, and other ingredients. With 2.0+, we’re using our own flavorings, protein, and sweetener so we needed some additional “stuff” (potassium and xanthan gum to be specific). For people using the Base Powder with their own protein powder, the experience is going to be identical to 1.9 so we kept the formulation the same. If we used the real base powder from 2.5, it would mix up too thick with most protein powders.

You can buy 2.5 Base Powder here.

Keto Chow Base Powder back in stock

Good news for all you people wanting to customize Keto Chow or who want to save on international shipping: Base Powder is back in stock! Please note: this isn’t the full mix and if you’re getting the regular flavored mix of Keto Chow, you don’t need to get this.

The Base Powder was originally designed for international customers who want to save on shipping but also works for people that want to use different proteins/flavors/sweeteners – it’s everything but the protein (which is the #1 ingredient by weight and volume in Keto Chow), sweetener, and flavor. I have some additional details and info about the Base Powder on this page. The Base Powder has slightly changed with 2.1 but the nutrient information will be the same, so much so that we will continue to use the bags for 2.0 and call it 2.0. I don’t want to make onerous changes to the base powder that mess up people who have been using it consistently for years. Like the full 2.1 mix, we are replacing magnesium citrate with magnesium malate. Citrate can cause digestive issues and a laxidative effect in doses higher than you’d consume with Keto Chow, but less chance for problems is a good thing. We are also replacing the form of selenium, specifically, which makes Keto Chow more palatable immediately after mixing. It still tastes better after a night in the fridge, but it’s less “vitaminy” right after mixing.

When we picked up the Base Powder they were mixing the Strawberry 2.1, we maybe might see that before the end of the week or early next week available for sale.

Flavor of the Week December 11-December 17: 10% off sale on Base Powder

For the next week, you can get 10% off the 21 meal “week” size of Keto Chow Base Powder. What’s “Base Powder”? Check out this post! The short version is: you add a little scoop to your chosen protein powder and it makes Keto Chow, with all the vitamins, minerals, etc… Want to save even more? Order exactly 5, 13 or 18 and get an additional 5% off – this is how many Base Powder packages fit into our standard boxes. If you order 7 or 19 or another number other than those EXACT quantities, you won’t get the 5% (and shipping will cost more).

Here’s the part where I say you should check out our store reviews on Google, and the reviews of Keto Chow. Here’s a “taste”:

Keto Chow is the best keto meal replacement product I have ever tried. And I’ve tried my share. I now need to look no further. These meal replacement shakes are customizable to an individual’s dietary needs, which is very important to some people. The instructions and options were a little overwhelming to me at first but the product was worth it and everything seems so simple now. Keto Chow is my go-to meal every time.

Here’s another, should be noted that I publish all of the reviews that come in – bad or good – as they are, typos intact. The only ones I remove are spam posts from people wanting you to buy pills to “enhance performance” and such:

I’ve tried Soylent (powder and liquid), Schmilk, Jimmy Joy, Feasy, and Keto Fuel. Keto Chow is easily my favorite meal replacement regardless of diet. The flavors are amazing, the texture is perfectly smooth, and the packaging is convenient and really professional looking. If I had any complaint, it would be that some flavors are a bit too sweet for me, but YMMV.

Base Powder availability update (still out of stock)

Quick update on the Base Powder. We were supposed to be getting a large shipment of the Base Powder to replace what recently ran out. Unfortunately, our production facility just informed me that the Acacia Gum we are waiting on did not ship as expected on Monday.  The reason given was that the FDA is holding the container, but we are trying to get more information because it was their understanding that the vendor already had the material.  Long and short of it is that material didn’t ship and we are trying to find out when we will get it.

So it could be next week or it could be the following week (around October 18th).

Update on Update on Base Powder Availability

Earlier today I posted that it’s going to be a while before we have the printed packaging for Base Powder, then I talked about trying to get an interim solution (brown bags with thermal printed labels, kinda like the image above^) and that we might have them in a few days.

Just Kidding! Surprisingly the packaging facility pulled off an amazing feat and got us 164 of the base powder TODAY as in: it’s already in stock and available right now. Booyeah.

Update on Base Powder availability

Update: surprisingly the packaging facility pulled off an amazing feat and got us 164 of the base powder TODAY as in: it’s already in stock and available right now.

We got a nasty surprise last week: we were getting quite low on Base Powder so we asked the packaging facility how long it would be before they had the rest of the Base Powder pouches we ordered a few months ago. Blink, blink, blink. We then found out that they didn’t have any more of the bags or labels for the bags.

Crap

A few days prior I had asked the place doing our bag printing for a quote on doing full printed bags for the Base Powder, I got the quote for those right about the same time I received the bad news. So the decision was to either try to get labels printed and buy stock bags… or get bags printed. The cost was about the same so we decided getting the printed bags was the direction we planned to go anyway – So we put in an order with the bag printing place and waited for info on when it would be ready.

This morning I got the confirmation and estimated ship date, I’m hoping in a few hours I’ll get the layout proof to approve so they can start production. Anyhow, the estimated ship date for the printed bags is:

September 18, 2017 – should be easy to remember, that’s Fiestas Patrias and the day before International Talk Like a Pirate Day. After printing it’ll take a few days to arrive at our warehouse, get over to our packaging facility and start production. The most probable date we will have Base Powder available is going to be sometime right around the end of September or very beginning of October 2017. So, sorry for the bad news and the delay =(

Now to give you some hope: we’re working on a potential stop-gap solution. We have some of the old bags (as seen in the image above) we used to package the Base Powder in (shout out to the Sav-On Bags team!), we’re currently labeling an interim batch of these and we’re planning on taking them down to the packaging facility later this afternoon. Once there we’ll have to contend with scheduling – I’m unsure if it will take just a few days or if it will take a week or longer for them to get it going but, it’s going to be faster than a MONTH. Either way, we should easily have the interim packages relatively soon. As soon as I get a solid estimate of production date I’ll update this page.

“Flavor” of the Week May 22-May 29: 20% off Sale on 1.9 Base Powder

This week we’re mixing it up a bit: the “flavor” of the week is… unflavored! 20% off the large 122 meal bag of 1.9 Base Powder*. It’s enough to mix with 10lbs of Dymatize Elite to make 5.82051 weeks of Keto Chow – this is the size we used when doing the mixing of Keto Chow 1.9. It should be noted that the 1.9 base powder and the 2.0 base powder are the same thing in different bags.

*While Supplies Last – We aren’t planning on mixing additional v1.9. We’re going to keep a close watch on the inventory level and keep it updated on the site, if you can still order the product, then it’s still on sale!

Eliminate the protein and suddenly you can fit 6x as many “weeks” in the same shipping package.
  • Going back to the previous point, I get a lot of varied requests for customized Keto Chow – almost all of them can be covered with the Base Powder. It’s super flexible and allows me to keep my product line simple.

Now, the Base Powder isn’t for everyone – if you use it you should be prepared to do a fair amount of math to determine how much protein powder you should use since most protein powders vary on their nutrient profiles. If in doubt, use Cron-o-meter. The Base Powder is in the Cron-o-meter database already, then you’d just add your protein powder to a “recipe” (along with how much heavy cream you’re using) and you’re good to go. The regular full mix is easier to use, especially for new users, but if you have the desire to customize a bit, you can check out the Base Powder, plus it’s on sale!
