Keto Chow 2.0 update – protein should be shipping tomorrow

This entry is part 81 of 131 in the series Ketogenic Diet

OK, here’s the short version: manufacturing should start April 5th. I might have limited supplies of 2.0 by April 14.

On Friday I went to visit the manufacturing facility we’re using for Keto Chow 2.0 to pick some (unrelated) stuff up. While there, I learned that the Whey Protein Isolate distributor didn’t want to ship the Isolate until either (a) the Concentrate was already returned, or (b) the Isolate was paid for up-front and they would take their sweet time issuing a credit for the Concentrate. How much was the isolate? Roughly half the total cost and I had paid half already back in November. So, now I’ve paid for the whole thing! (seriously, let’s get this GOING!!!!).

I just talked to the manufacturing facility – they said the protein should ship tomorrow and take 5+ business days to arrive. Once it does, they have to pull a sample for testing (gotta make sure it doesn’t have any e-Coli, salmonella or other bad stuff) and then the fun begins. They’re planning on clearing the schedule so they can make it as quickly as possible. With any luck, we’ll be getting some as early as Friday, April 14 – if not then Monday, April 17th. They’re going to be making Chocolate first (crap, that means I need to drive the pallet of Peanut Flour down to the place that’s packaging the Chocolate Peanut Butter pretty soon). Not sure if they’ll be running week and sample sizes concurrently on different machines or what. We may be having a rather exciting next few weeks.

In related news, I have the second round of Keto Chow 2.0 already on order. I’d rather have way too much for a month or two then run out!

Keto Chow 2.0 not ready for today =( Should have Chocolate by Thursday

This entry is part 82 of 131 in the series Ketogenic Diet

Well, guess this is what happens when you have a vacation scheduled 6 months ago and don’t hound the manufacturer day and night while you’re on a rented boat in the middle of a national park with no cell signal – I just talked to the place that’s doing the production of Keto Chow 2.0 and they apparently had a bunch of problems with their machines last week and did not get started on packaging until today. They’re going to be doing Chocolate first and are promising to have some up to me by Thursday. Sad news =( Hopefully this will be the last hiccup on this journey.

Update: They ran into some additional problems and have to make some adjustments to avoid clumping – it’s now looking more like we will get it on Monday the 24th.

The one bit of good news is they finally have a solution for Chocolate Peanut Butter samples – I still won’t have those in the first round but I’m already working on the second one and Chocolate Peanut Butter samples will be part of it.

Keto Chow 2.0 Quick Update – Chocolate Week Bags should be here today

This entry is part 84 of 131 in the series Ketogenic Diet

Sometime a few hours after noon today we should be getting our first round of 2.0 – They’ll only have the Chocolate and only in the 21 meal “week” size (no samples yet). I actually like 2.0 Chocolate better than 1.9 Rich Chocolate – the best way I can describe how it tastes is that it reminds me of chocolate pudding so far as the flavor goes, I like it WAY better than Chocolate Fudge 1.9.

I’ll be taking photos for the shopping cart and checking how well the bags fit into the shipping boxes we have – Hopefully they are similar to how 1.9 fits so we won’t have to drastically change our shipping calculations and boxes. Provided it does show up before 4, I’m hoping to have it available for order on the site later this evening.

Why am I not putting it up on the site for order until I actually have it? A couple of reasons: like I said earlier, I’m uncertain of how big the final product will be, they may have more air in the bag and take up more space, we may be able to fit fewer bags in a given box. Secondly, We’ve had enough delays I’m not wanting to have them up for ordering until we actually have them, simple as that. Anyhow, hopefully, you’ll see an announcement that they’re available in about 10 hours =)

Chocolate Keto Chow 2.0 now available! 2.0 Base Powder also available.

This entry is part 85 of 131 in the series Ketogenic Diet

OK, it’s on! We got 1 pallet of Chocolate today and 3 more are coming tomorrow, that should last quite a while =) We took pictures and tested out how they fit into our existing boxes, we were quite happy to find that they fit the same as 1.9 so we don’t have to do crazy junk with the shipping methods and costs.

So, if you want to grab a bag of Chocolate 2.0 – it’s available for order!

State of the Keto Chow – the transition to 2.0, and you

This entry is part 86 of 131 in the series Ketogenic Diet

Updated

It’s time to talk about the status of switching to Keto Chow 2.0, what to expect from 1.9 and such. About 2 months ago we did “one great last” purchase of protein powder for 1.9 – it was essentially how much of each flavor we had used over the previous 2 months – except Rich Chocolate, we ordered 3 months worth of that. The idea was to get everything finalized as far as mixing went and hopefully be running out a bit after 2.0 became available.

As you know: 2.0 was delayed, and delayed, we finally got Chocolate 2.0 in the large bags. The progress manufacturing the bags has been somewhat slow and steady – I actually did a good/bad thing in having them do chocolate first – which had nearly 2x as many packages as any other flavor – it’s good that we have a lot of Chocolate but it took a while to work through the production of it, at the expense of having other flavors quicker. Anyway, here is the order they are making the flavors in:

  1. Chocolate – delivered
  2. Cookies & Cream – delivered
  3. Salted Caramel – delivered
  4. Strawberry – delivered
  5. Banana – delivered
  6. Peanut Butter – delivered
  7. Mocha – delivered
  8. Vanilla – delivered

So here’s a quick rundown on 1.9 availability for the week packs:

  • Gourmet Vanilla – out of stock.
  • Cookies & Cream – out of stock.
  • Chocolate Peanut Butter – out of stock.
  • Snickerdoodle – out of stock.
  • Rich Chocolate – out of stock.
  • Chocolate Fudge – out of stock.
  • Strawberry Blast – out of stock.

The question came up yesterday: What about the people that like v 1.9 better than the 2.0? I haven’t had anybody try 2.0 and like 1.9 better. I’m sure there will be a few though, if you happen to fit into that category: I’m truly sorry for the disruption. A potential fix would be to get the Base Powder and use the same Dymatize Elite protein that I have been using for 1.9. You could also mix up the recipe for Keto Chow 1.5.

What about the 2.0 samples? That’s a fun one: the “stick pack” roll film we’re using has been breaking in the machine every 20 or so samples. I’m trying to get the place that made the stuff over to help dial in the settings so they can get it running. It’s very likely that the packaging I had printed (7000 of each flavor) will need to be re-done with a different medium.

Keto Chow 2.0 Vanilla now in stock and ready for ordering

This entry is part 87 of 131 in the series Ketogenic Diet

You can now order Keto Chow 2.0 Vanilla, along with the Chocolate we previously got. They have Cookies & Cream and Salted Caramel mixed and will be bagging those soon, might have them early next week.

Update: we’ve pulled Vanilla 2.0 and it’s going to be re-mixed, it’ll be a few weeks before we have Vanilla in stock. The other flavors coming next week appear to be just fine.

Problem with Vanilla 2.0 viscosity

This entry is part 88 of 131 in the series Ketogenic Diet

TL;DR: we’ve pulled Vanilla 2.0 and it’s going to be re-mixed, it’ll be a few weeks before we have Vanilla in stock. The other flavors coming next week appear to be just fine.

I was super happy to have Vanilla Keto Chow 2.0 in stock and available. I regularly do quality control on the product so I grabbed a bag of Vanilla 2.0 and mixed up 6, I could tell immediately that there was a problem – the viscosity (thickness) was all wrong. Instead of being thick like a milk shake it was thin like milk or a protein shake. I let it sit overnight and it was still thin in the morning. It tastes the same, and nutritionally it’s not a problem – all the xanthan gum does is increase viscosity.

So, I spent the day driving back and forth to the manufacturer figuring stuff out. They definitely added xanthan gum to the mix – each batch goes through a pretty meticulous quality control procedure:

  • The formula is multiplied out into the size batch they need and the total mass required in kilograms for each ingredient is put onto a tracking sheet
  • As each ingredient is weighed out, the technician notes the reading on the scale, initials the reading and a second technician initials that it was correctly done
  • the total batch weight is compared to the target weight
  • they routinely verify their inventory based on what they brought in minus what was supposed to be used.

The batch for Vanilla should have used around 9 Kg of xanthan gum – that’s roughly 20lbs. The final weight was within 0.01kg of the target.

So we’re not sure what is going on with Vanilla – the only difference between it and most other flavors is color (or lack thereof) and the flavor mix. The end result is we yanked Vanilla from the site and zeroed out the inventory. All this got me spooked that the other flavors might have similar problems, Chocolate is fine but Cookies & Cream along with Salted Caramel are going into bagging early next week. So that was my first trip down there. I brought two blender bottles with the right amount of water and heavy cream and mixed them up right there. Viscosity is perfect on Cookies & Cream as well as Salted Caramel. We discussed several options and ultimately it was decided that they are going to re-do the batch. So I drove back down, this time with all of the remaining Vanilla 2.0. We’re going to have to get new bags printed which may slow things down some. I expect the earliest we’ll see Vanilla 2.0 will be 3-4 weeks from now (early to late June 2017).

Anybody who was shipped Vanilla 2.0 should have gotten an email from me earlier today with options for what they want to do. One thing I forgot in the email was that if they choose to keep the Vanilla and happen to have xanthan gum on hand (or if they want to order some using the refunds) it just needs 1.3g of xanthan gum in 44.1g of vanilla and you have the right viscosity – I tested it myself =) If you happened to have ordered Vanilla 2.0 and didn’t see an email from me, I’ll be following up with those that haven’t responded yet.

The end of an era and anniversaries – all the 1.9 is mixed

This entry is part 89 of 131 in the series Ketogenic Diet

I’ve been mixing Keto Chow (and People Chow before that) since January 2015. Yesterday, 29 months later, we mixed up the final batch of Keto Chow 1.9. All the Dymatize protein is used up and the front room and “dining room” of my house are no longer storage rooms for supplies and equipment. I’m not going to lie: I was pretty gleeful going around with a vacuum cleaning up all the powder that has defined a large part of our lives for the last 2 1/2 (almost) years. It tends to settle on every surface in the house, even upstairs. I even took the computer our and blew it out with the air compressor (I think there was 50g in there!). The ironic thing is we’ve been waiting for the end of mixing to start a remodel on part of the house, specifically the aforementioned front room and dining room. Drywall work starts Monday. Guess everything will be dusty again! =)

Early next week we should start getting the remaining flavors of 2.0. They’re all mixed (and I’ve tested them to make sure we won’t repeat the problem with Vanilla) And hopefully, we’ll get the samples soon after that.

Fun story: 17 years ago I married my amazing wife. I proposed 2 1/2 weeks after we met because I waited a week, concerns about the ring and all – turns out you can propose without a ring and let her pick one later (crazy, right?). The night before we got married, my wife’s bridesmaids did a sleep-over at the apartment we were going to be living in (I was still living in my parent’s basement) and the morning of our wedding, May 6 2000, they were frantically getting ready. In the midst of all the commotion, the bacon that was cooking for their breakfast was forgotten and started to burn. There was a lot of smoke. When I saw my soon-to-be wife and embraced her for the first time on our wedding day, I said the 4 words that have come to symbolize so much in our relationship:

“You smell like bacon…”

I’ll never live that down =) Makes for a great story though, the kids think it’s funny and so does she – she just likes to rib me a bit, especially when I cook bacon and it smells like our wedding day all over again. Holy cow we looked like little kids! I do weigh less now than I did back then though =)

Update on remaining flavors for Keto Chow 2.0

This entry is part 90 of 131 in the series Ketogenic Diet

OK, just talked to the place I’m using to manufacture Keto Chow 2.0 – turns out we’ve caused some logistical problems for them with the amount of stuff we’re ordering, I guess that’s a good thing in certain respects, makes me wonder how we managed to do it all manually for that long =) Anyhow, the owner of the facility went on a trip last week to look at buying a new pouch filling machine that can do 40-60 bags a minute. The problem was that while he was out, no new progress was made on the rest of the flavors – you may have noticed we didn’t get Cookies & Cream or Salted Caramel last week. They’re going to be packaging both of those flavors in the next few days with the other flavors following soon after, I’m supposed to be getting more concrete info by Wednesday and I’m anticipating we’ll get some of the product by Friday. Worst case scenario I’ll drive down on Friday and pick some up.

Along with the new bagging machine, they’re also adding additional “clean” rooms for doing the mixing and bagging – they’ve been using the same area to mix and to bag which has slowed things down considerably. Having different areas set up will be better and we should be able to get the product more quickly. No news on samples though – hopefully I’ll get an update on those soon.
