Keto Success Stories & Experiments

100 Days of Keto (Chow) Day -1

This entry is part 5 of 107 in the series 100 Days of Keto Chow

I did just learn that UPS isn’t going to be picking up the packages we shipped today, that’ll delay those packages by 1 business day but 2 actual days. Guess I should have known that since it’s on their website. Bunch of slackers!

We are having our traditional “Keto New Year’s” party tonight with our family and some friends. There are 2 boxes of crackers for the children that aren’t doing keto but the rest of the food will be ultra low carb (and delicious!). It’s also the last party I’ll be having any food at for about 4 months, so I gotta make it count =) Here’s what we’re planning on:

  • Bacon wrapped Jalapeno poppers
  • Little Smokies in “G Hughes” BBQ sauce
  • Shrimp (with low carb cocktail sauce – it’s sugar free ketchup and horseradish)
  • Diet soda with heavy cream
  • Keto Eggnog
  • Bacon Ranch Cheese ball with crackers
  • Spinach artichoke dip
  • Deviled eggs

Just to be clear: I’m not trying to gain any weight before the contest, that’ll just be more to lose.  I actually lost weight this morning according to my scale. I’m just enjoying some fantastic keto foods before the experiment starts up. Speaking of the weight loss challenge: there are 136 people doing the Keto Chow DietBet challenge, that’s more than I anticipated, cool!

On a COMPLETELY unrelated note: I needed to do some bulk editing of the draft posts for the 100 days of Keto Chow (I used a plugin and a CSV to pre-populate them so I won’t mess things up), ALMOST everything came through right except for the order the posts would appear in the series. They popped into what looked like a completely random order. That meant I got to dust off my SQL skills and do a JOIN query to get all of the postmeta.meta_value for all the posts.post_title LIKE ‘100 Days of Keto (Chow)%’ then I got to change the value and re-populate them into the database with the right number. This was the kind of thing I used to do ALL DAY back in 2009-2014, it’s amazing how quickly I have to go back to StackExchange and get the correct syntax.

100 Days of Keto (Chow) Day -2

This entry is part 4 of 107 in the series 100 Days of Keto Chow

Hoo boy, we’re getting closer to the starting of the challenge! Since I won’t be much fun in respects to going out to dinner for the next 14 weeks, last night my wife wanted to go out to dinner one last time – so we went to a Brazillian BBQ Churrascaria. It’s the kind of place where they bring around spits and slice off slabs of delicious fatty meat. Good stuff.

Tonight I’m going to be smoking pork short ribs. That’ll be yummy =)

Tomorrow we’re going to have our New Year’s party. I’ll post about that later, this is a short post =)

100 Days of Keto (Chow) Day -3

This entry is part 3 of 107 in the series 100 Days of Keto Chow

3 days until the madness begins =) In case you missed yesterday’s post: In addition to doing 100 days of Keto Chow only, doing a weight loss challenge for my city, and doing some science – I also set up a DietBet challenge so that others can get some motivation for 2019. It’ll run for 4 weeks from January 2-31. You aren’t REQUIRED to do only Keto Chow like I am, but you are welcome to do so if you wish (I’m not going to be policing anyone =). Just to be clear: I am going to be having diet soda and occasional sugar-free gum. I’m also considering using some of the various recipes that use keto chow as an ingredient during the first 6 weeks of the 100 days when my primary goal is straight weight loss only. Once I enter the science and controlled variables phase, things will get far more rigorous.

We hosted a family “Christmas Breakfast” with my wife’s family today, a few days late and a few hours late; still fantastic. Everything we had out was keto:

  • Bacon
  • 4 different kinds of sausage
  • Keto waffles (some with Snickerdoodle Keto Chow, the rest with Chocolate Keto Chow)
  • Whipped heavy cream (with some liquid stevia)
  • About 2 dozen eggs
  • 4 different kinds of sugar-free syrups

The food that was brought in wasn’t so keto but that’s OK, I still enjoyed my food. Eating keto sucks =P (yes, that’s sugar-free maple syrup on my sausage).

100 Days of Keto (Chow) Day -4

This entry is part 2 of 107 in the series 100 Days of Keto Chow

Yesterday I announced that I was going to be starting a bit of fun on January 2, 2019: I’ll be doing 100 days of Keto using Keto Chow. Part of it will be for a weight loss challenge my city does, and part of it will be doing some science with controlled variables. I decided that everyone should be able to get in on the fun too!

You are officially invited to join in on the first month with me!

I set up a DietBet challenge this morning with the entry amount at $10 (the lowest I can set, I want the barrier to entry low!). The challenge runs for 4 weeks from January 2 through January 31. DietBet does its thing and there’s a pot for anyone that loses more than 4% of their body weight but we’re just going to be using DietBet so that they can handle all the verification and such. The REAL prizes are as follows:

  • Top percentage loser gets a $150 Keto Chow gift card
  • Second Place gets a $100 Keto Chow gift card
  • Third Place gets a $75 Keto Chow gift card

Employees of Keto Chow (including me) will also be competing, but there will be different prizes for them, so don’t worry =).

One thing to note: When you sign up, DietBet is going to try to get you to add a $5 membership and a trial of some exercise program. Personally, I’d recommend declining both:

100 Days of Keto (Chow) Day 00 – Last day of “normal”

This entry is part 6 of 107 in the series 100 Days of Keto Chow

Last night we did our yearly New Year keto party, the food was excellent. Today I had my last “normal” day before the 100 days of Keto Chow begins. We went sledding, that was a lot of fun. We also went out to dinner one last time as a family (no I’m not dying). I got the sensible 16oz prime rib along with “loaded” broccoli:

This morning I did the initial weigh-in for the DietBet Challenge and tomorrow I’ll do the initial weigh-in for my city weight loss competition. If you’re thinking about joining the challenge, there’s still time!

Lastly, we did our weekly Facebook LIVE. Here’s the version that went up live (I’ll have the higher quality one up on YouTube tomorrow):

Starting 2019 with a plan: 100 days of Keto (Chow) Day -5

This entry is part 1 of 107 in the series 100 Days of Keto Chow

In 5 days, starting January 2, I’m going to do 100 days of ONLY Keto Chow for all my meals. 6 weeks in, I’ll finish a weight loss contest and start some science. I doubt anyone will want to join in on the science portion with me, but everyone is invited to join on doing a solid 100 days of Keto with no cheating, no compromises.

Some time ago (4 years ago!) I participated in my local city’s January weight loss competition, ended up getting second place. There’s another one coming up on January 2, 2019, and I think I’ll do it again. The contest runs for 6 weeks. There are weekly weigh-ins for the contest and some modest prizes for the winner and runners-up. There’s going to be a lot happening with Keto Chow in the next 100 days so this will give me a push to blog about what’s going on daily. I’m planning on also doing a video each day as well.

Here’s my plan for the first 100 days (or so, it’ll actually be 101, whatever) of 2019:

  • Unlike in 2015 where I “leveled the playing field” by deliberately going off keto and replenishing my glycogen (water weight), this time I’m going to stay Keto just before the contest. I will, however, go a bit nuts with keto food at our yearly family New Year’s party. I figure that’ll do the trick and I won’t feel the negative effects of carbing up.
  • My lovely wife wants to do some kind of exercise together. Due to scheduling constraints and other logistical issues, we think the best fit is going to be doing the P90 program, which will allow us some flexibility in when and where we do it, while still getting the kids off to school. Personally, I’d prefer StrongLifts 5×5 but this is what we’re going to do (and the 90 days of P90 kinda set the tone for the rest of the experiment).
  • January 2 is the first weigh-in for the contest – it establishes the “baseline” against which the individual progress is calculated. The contest looks for % change in body weight.
  • During the first few days, I’m going to have the calories a little higher than normal, around 2200, to allow for an easier transition without any hunger getting me down. After that, I’ll switch to 2000 calories a day and go from there.
  • The first 6 weeks (up to day 42), my primary goal is weight loss. To that end, I’m planning on fasting the final 3-4 days before the last weigh-in.
  • I’m also hosting a 4 week DietBet challenge – come compete for Keto Chow gift certificates!
  • After the final weigh-in for the weight loss contest, I’ll resume eating 3 meals of Keto Chow a day, this time working on a variant of my earlier experiments. In those earlier experiments, I was changing variables on a weekly basis. This time I’m going to draw it out for a longer period to reduce the likelihood of the variables influencing subsequent results (I’m going to do each test for at least 2 weeks instead of just 1).
  • My plan for the following 8 weeks (with a blood test each week):
    • Keto Chow with just heavy cream for days 42-44 to recover from the fast and then get a blood test for the baseline of the science portion.
    • Keto Chow with just heavy cream for 2 weeks.
    • Keto Chow with just Avocado Oil for 2 weeks.
    • Keto Chow with Avocado Oil and MCT Oil for 2 weeks.
    • Keto Chow with butter for 2 weeks (this will be using the impending Savory flavors of Keto Chow that use beef bone broth protein instead of milk protein, ideally I’ll have “nearly production” versions ready for the test).
  • Dr. Jeff Gerber had some question about the results I got with an earlier experiment, this should help answer some of those more thoroughly.
  • I’m also planning on having an additional variable along with the fat type: number of calories. In my earlier 6 week experiment, I made sure it was isocaloric: the same 2000 calories a day for the entire 6 weeks. This time I’m going to add 100 calories each week and see how that affects the expected weight loss. Everything that I’ve learned indicates that if I keep my carbohydrate consumption to a minimum, increasing the calories (to a point, likely under 3000) should have little bearing on weight loss due to increased metabolism.
  • To that end, I’m planning on doing a Resting Metabolic Rate test at the beginning and end of the experiment. We’ll see how that turns out =)

So there you have it. Now it’s written down so I’ll actually do it. I think it’s pretty ambitious.

Results and conclusions from 6 week fat experiment (42 days of Keto Chow)

This entry is part 44 of 44 in the series 42 days of Keto Chow Experiment

I have my analysis done on the data from my 6-week experiment doing Keto Chow for all my meals and swapping out different types of fats to see how they impact my lipid panels. It’s all chronicled over on the page about the experiment, along with an extensive array of graphs and other fun stuff.

I also proved that at least in me: eating 2000 calories a day of mostly fat with some protein I’ll lose weight. Switch that to 2000 calories of mostly carbohydrates with a little fat and the same amount of protein (and again, the same 2000 calories), I will gain weight.

Fun stuff!

42 Days of Keto Chow – Day 42, done done done.

This entry is part 42 of 44 in the series 42 days of Keto Chow Experiment

Final day. Honestly could have gone longer if it wasn’t for the stupid sugar this week, the rather bad tasting Macadamia nut oil, or the gastrointestinal duress of liquid coconut oil. I’m looking forward to going back to my preferred heavy cream and avocado oil mixture. These last 2 days I have had diarrhea, it might be from the sugar – or it could be that the stomach flu is making the rounds among my kids and if I’ve managed to NOT contract it, that would be a miracle (ever tried to convince a sick kid to clean up their own throwup? Isn’t happening, buddy).

I started adding the blood tests, graphs, and other assorted data to the page about this experiment. It’s looking pretty good so far!

I got the costs for Keto Chow 2.1 this morning and I’ve been having lots of fun with spreadsheets all morning. The short version is: prices on current flavors will be the same, the new flavors are slightly more expensive to make so those will be a bit more… except the “Natural Strawberry” that’s sweetened with monk fruit instead of sucralose. That one is significantly more expensive to make and will likely be priced at or above the price of the peanut butter.

42 Days of Keto Chow – Day 41, blood tests back

This entry is part 41 of 44 in the series 42 days of Keto Chow Experiment

I was watching a video by Dave Feldman (where he had to keep pausing to eat skittles, it was great) and he talked about fructose malabsorption causing him digestive issues. I don’t think I have that problem which is why I haven’t had really bad problems during this phase. Again it seems that I dodged another bullet for which I’m grateful. I’m still anxious to get back into keto. Yesterday I bought the brisket and ribs for the meetup, they’re currently in the Sous-Vide cooking for a few days and I’ll finish them in the smoker on Saturday.

Got my Coconut Oil week blood tests back – REALLY interesting stuff. I’ve entered the data into the spreadsheet (check it out!) but here are some of the highlights:

  • I hit an all-time low LDL-P (particle count): 567. It’s down 43% from 996 the week before. ? (you’re looking for under 1000)
  • All time low LDL-C: 56, down from 78. ?
  • I brought back down my triglycerides from 148 to 103 ? (you want this below 100)
  • My HDL-C went WAY up (52% to be exact): from 40 to 61 ??? (you want this as high as possible)
  • A1c is still steady at 4.8 ?
  • Fasting insulin went WAY up, from 5.2 to 8.4 – the highest I’ve recorded so far. ?

This test was the first time I saw a departure from the previous inversion pattern of LDL-C and Triglycerides which would go up and down opposite of each other. I don’t know if it was the high amount of MCTs in the coconut oil or what. Regardless, I can handily say that consuming almost entirely saturated fat for a week made my blood tests look AMAZING.

Here are some of the graphs from the spreadsheet:
