Chris Bair is a technology and computer geek. He became involved in the nutritionally complete "future foods" movement in January 2014, originally with a conventional recipe and later switching to a high fat, low carb "ketogenic" variant on October 2014. In January 2015 he created the recipe for Keto Chow and released it without restriction for anyone to use, at the same time he began mixing the recipe up for people that wanted a finished product and has seen steady growth in the business every month since.

#NoSnackNovember is on!

There are a lot of “No” in November things that go on, I like to shave the sides of my face so I’m not doing “noSHAVEmber”, and I think that one of my biggest obstacles is snacking. So I’m doing No Snack November. That means if I’m going to eat something, it has to be during a meal. No after dinner treats, mid-day stuff, etc…

There’s a popular belief that “we need lots of small meals throughout the day to keep our energy and metabolism up.” The biggest issue with that is there’s no science to back it up. So far as we can tell, it’s actually a marketing campaign by grain-based snack food companies trying to make us feel good about buying their products. It’s a “Factoid” which is defined as “an assumption or speculation that is reported and repeated so often that it becomes accepted as fact.” To the contrary, every time you eat, there’s an insulin response and that keeps your body from using stored energy in the form of fat. The IDM Program has a great article that discusses the perils of snacking.

What you really need to do is limit the number of times you eat in a day. Even better is to go for a period of time without eating anything and then follow that up with eating. This is often referred to as “Intermittent Fasting” but is more properly known as “Time-Restricted Feeding”. You can read more about the benefits and methodology of IF/TRF on this excellent site. So, the challenge is to go all of November without any snacking. Who’s with me?!

When I was researching protein powders and stuff after I decided to start the keto diet I fortunately stumbled across keto Chow. This stuff tastes great unlike a lot of other products and is nutritionally balanced for someone on a keto diet. In addition it’s not just a hundred calorie protein powder but a full meal replacement which is unusual.their custom nutrition calculator makes it super easy for me to meet my macro and caloric goals each day and the product itself taste amazing extremely smooth the longer you let it refrigerate before you drink and reminds me of a rich melted ice cream. I would recommend it to anyone on the keto diet and to anyone in general who’s looking for a great tasting meal replacement.

Comparison of Keto “Meal Replacement” nutrition, costs, net carbs, fat, and more

in 2017, when we went to our first KetoCon in Austin Texas, I noticed that quite a few of the vendors that were going to be there offered “meal replacement” products marketed to the keto eater – so I decided to do a comparison of the available options, mostly for myself so I could speak intelligently about what’s out there but I thought it would be of value to the community at large.

You can view the spreadsheet I’ve put together here. The table is sorted by whether it’s nutritionally complete and then by cost for 2000 calories. I put “meal replacement” in quotes for a reason: many of the mixes do not give you a nutritionally complete meal, rather they are more of a snack – honestly, you’d be better off grabbing some string cheese (you’ll notice I have an entry in the table for string cheese! =). You cannot use any of the non-complete products for more than an occasional “meal”, once a day at the most though you might want to limit consumption to 2-3 times a week.

The ones that are nutritionally complete are designed to give you all your nutrition for any given meal. Meaning you should get all your vitamins, electrolytes, fats, everything. In theory, you could replace a single meal, multiple meals in a day, or even go nuts and replace all of your meals without suffering from nutritional deficiencies. Personally, I like to call them “engineered staple foods”.

Earlier today, we got an email from a guy using Keto Chow that thought it was remarkable the change in how many supplements he no longer takes when using Keto Chow, you can see that at the top of this post. That email got me thinking about a photo someone posted on Facebook showing the difference in nutrition between their old “meal replacement” and Keto Chow using Cron-O-Meter (which I think is the BEST app for tracking a keto diet, period). I thought it would be good to show a similar comparison, I simply loaded up Cron-O-Meter and selected a meal of 8 different “Keto Meal Replacement” options to compare with Keto Chow, here’s what you get:

None aside from Keto Chow even come close to providing 1/3 of your daily vitamins and minerals, and most are extremely low calorie and low fat – like they’re not sure about this whole “keto” thing. I have no problem at all living for weeks or months on Keto Chow alone, I doubt that any of the creators of the other “Meal Replacements” would even attempt such a thing (and for good reason). I believe that if a product isn’t good enough for me, it isn’t good enough to sell to other people either.

Two of the nutritionally complete options in the spreadsheet require you to buy your own fat source (Keto Chow and Keto Fuel) and that’s included in the cost per meal based on Great Value Heavy Whipping Cream for Keto Chow, Chosen Foods Avocado Oil (also for Keto Chow), and Great Value Olive Oil for Keto Fuel. Your costs may be higher or lower depending on how much you use. Putting in the cost for 2000 calories on these two was weird. If you use 157ml of heavy cream in Keto Chow, it costs $10.86 – use 118ml (for 1600 calories a day) and the cost for 2000 calories goes up to $13.10. The same sort of thing happens with Keto Fuel (which could also use heavy cream instead of olive oil, that’s just what’s in the directions). You could also use your own fat source to amp up the other products to a higher calorie. Anyhow, because of this confounder, I’ve also included a cost per day for how much it would cost to get a full day’s nutrition based on the number of meals per day the manufacturer recommends.

Others using Keto Chow to conduct science!

Siobhan Huggins recently posted about her half of an experiment where she was tracking biomarkers while changing around the amount of fat she was using. We were super happy when she approached us about using Keto Chow for the experiment. I (Chris) have done my own experiments using Keto Chow to tightly control variables, which is difficult to do with nutrition unless you’re using something like Keto Chow – it’s cool to see others using Keto Chow for science as well.

Siobhan was going for 6000 calories a day during parts of the experiment. That’s a REALLY difficult thing to do unless you’re using something like Keto Chow:

I’d say, in this case, the inconvenience of having to drink 6 shakes a day was far outweighed by the data I got in the process. Lipoprotein(a) coming from a baseline diet to a high calorie/high fat phase provided some useful information that – of course – leaves me with even more questions, and possible future experiments in mind, for sure. Plus, it wasn’t too bad, as the very kind staff at the hotel where the conference was taking place offered to store my shakes in the front office fridge so they could stay refrigerated until I needed them. I’m extremely grateful, as this made the whole process much less of a hassle, and allowed it to go as smoothly as it did. The food served at the conference actually did look quite appetizing, but in this case the sacrifices of citizen science won out over the freshly carved meat they were serving.

Even with that said, I must say that my diet over the conference weekend was definitely more appetizing than what Dave was eating – as he expressed multiple times! I’m sure he’ll be mentioning that himself, however, in part 2

Update on Sample Availability: Orange, Mint, Toffee, and Peanut Butter, in particular – Late November

Yes, that’s a sad panda. The Chocolate Peanut Butter samples are still having severe issues with packaging. The packaging company tried for a 4th time to get it to run late last week and was again unsuccessful. At this point, I’m actually looking into going back to the old “stick pack” packaging just to get Peanut Butter working.

As for the other flavors: many of them we have a good number in stock, and some we’ve even received our second order so we have super awesome inventory levels. But a number are getting low and we’ve earmarked the remaining amounts to go into the variety bundles until they run out. The following are out of stock in the individual sample size and will, in the coming month, probably be removed from the samplers too (with the price lowered accordingly):

  • Orange Cream
  • Rootbeer Float we ended up getting some of this out of the blue
  • Chocolate Mint
  • Chocolate Toffee
  • Chocolate Peanut Butter

All are in-stock and available in the larger 21 meal packages, just not the samples.

The mixed powder is over at the packaging place, but got there a day late to be packaged along with the other batch. We are on the schedule to have it packaged sometime in late November. That said, they’ve done a really good job of fitting us in and getting it done early. Until then, I expect I’ll have this page saved to my frequently used response templates so I can easily communicate when we are expecting to get them in stock.

I am new to Keto and was searching for some type of meal replacement drink. I’m not a big breakfast person. I absolutely love Keto Chow. I’ve tried several flavors…banana, strawberry, orange, snickerdoodle…they are all great! I love the texture of the shake. It tastes like melted ice cream. It’s yummy and I don’t miss the protein shakes I used to drink before Keto. I have also found that Keto Chow works great as a recovery drink after long runs.

I have been using your flavorful product for about 6 months. I love it!! (just wish I could lose weight)
I do not mix the drink the way you suggested the last couple of months, and I feel more people would like to hear of my method.
I measure all on a weight scale. First goes in the water (15-16 oz), then the powder (1.5oz), I then mix that with a whisk for a completely lump free drink. Then I add 4 oz of whipping cream. It even stays mixed overnight!
I mix almost a gallon at a time….I don’t mess with individual servings!

Recording from our weekly live video, with special guest Cristy Davis!

Last night we did our weekly Facebook live video, but we were able to convince Cristy Davis, founder of The Keto Village: Sofa King Facebook group who was here in town, to stop by and be a part of the mayhem.

Unlike a surprising majority of keto Facebook groups, hers isn’t a totalitarian fiefdom ruled by an overbearing monarch that bans people for voicing opinions – yes I know, I sound like the peasant in “Holy Grail”. Cristy was once banned from a Facebook group because a photo she posted had a milkshake that someone else was drinking in the background, it “triggered” people! I was banned from a Keto Facebook group for saying there “aren’t keto police that enforce certain rules, keto doesn’t have a rulebook; it’s about science, not theology”). Generally, I tell people to be wary of keto Facebook groups, this is one of the good ones, so is CompletelyKeto – run by Kim Howerton, and Insulin IQ of Dr. Ben Bikman fame.

There was a problem with the Internet a few minutes into it, so I’d recommend checking out the YouTube version which has better video quality anyway:
