Whipping cream can work, it just has a lower fat content. Lower fat content means more lactose (sugar) which will make ketosis more difficult. Half-and-half has an even lower fat content and really a lot of sugar that will likely guarantee you won’t achieve ketosis.
Here are the calories and carbohydrate content for a 15ml/1 tablespoon “serving”:
fat % | calories | carbs | carbs/400 calories | |
Skim Milk | 0.08 | 5 | 0.76 | 58.35 |
2% Milk | 1.98 | 8 | 0.73 | 38.40 |
Whole Milk | 3.25 | 9 | 0.72 | 31.47 |
Half-and-half | 11.5 | 20 | 0.65 | 13.13 |
Light/Table cream | 19.1 | 29 | 0.55 | 7.51 |
Whipping cream | 30.9 | 44 | 0.44 | 4.05 |
Heavy whipping cream | 36.1 | 51 | 0.43 | 3.34 |
Darigold “Classic 40“ | 40.0 | 60 | 0.40 | 2.67 |
Butter | 81.1 | 102 | 0.01 | 0.03 |
Interestingly enough, all of the creams have less than 1g of carbs per “serving” so the package will say “0g total carbs” – even though the half-and-half has nearly 4x as many carbs per calorie compared to heavy cream. You have to muck around the USDA food database to get accurate nutrition information.
I live in China. Heavy Whipping cream is very hard to find. But 35% whipping cream is very common.
Starting a 100% Keto Chow diet, won’t eat anything else. Is it safe to just replace Heavy Cream with 35% whipping cream ?
Should I adjust the dosages or can I just use the normal 2000 cal and 1200 cal dosages but with whipping cream instead of heavy whipping cream ?
Sounds like heavy cream under a different name, should work just fine. You’d need to adjust the amount you use according to how many calories you need regardless of what it’s called.
Do your directions have the Darigold Classic 40% in mind? I have easy access to that, but I’m not sure if I should use less than half a cup.
The calorie calculator assumes REGULAR heavy cream instead of the Darigold 40. Personally, I use the Darigold and account for it using Cron-o-meter: https://old.ketochow.xyz/2017/01/tracking-net-carbs-using-cron-o-meter/
Can i use half n half?
I would not recommend using half and half – too much sugar and too little fat. You can see more details on https://old.ketochow.xyz/ufaqs/will-whipping-cream-half-half-work-heavy-whipping-cream/
I accidentally bought table cream instead of the heavy cream- should i go toss the table cream and go get the heavy cream or can i use it until its done then covert over?
That’s up to you. From what I can tell, “table” cream is the same as “light” cream.
i have been on twice a day for two months with NO weight loss!!!Using butter for the fat.HELP!!
What are your other meals (including snacks)? Are you tracking your food in Cron-o-meter?
I’f I’m lactose intolerant what can i use in place of the heavy cream? I’m trying to find a meal replacement but having a hard time.

Beginner question…. what if the difference between Heavy Cream and Heaving Whipping Cream? Thanks!
“whipping” has some extra emulsifiers that won’t matter and you can easily find it in most supermarkets, heavy cream (no whipping) is very difficult to find. Personally I prefer butter.
My sister in law is a former ER nurse. She flipped out when she heard I was using heavy cream and butter in shakes and cooked meals. She started ranting about dangerous “saturated fats”. Do you have any information about that? Would it be possible for you to do a video discussing it?
Here is a fantastic page that goes into all the science of saturated fats and them NOT causing heart disease: https://www.nutritioncoalition.us/saturated-fats-do-they-cause-heart-disease
I am allergic to milk, do you have any other shakes for people like me?
Most of our Keto Chow (all of the sweet flavors) uses milk protein isolate. Three of our Savory Soups (Creamy Tomato Basil, Taco Soup Base, and Beef Soup Base) use beef protein and beef bone broth. These are completely dairy-free and suitable for people with milk protein allergies.
If you’re lactose intolerant, we have some customers who can tolerate the milk protein-based flavors when they use these mixing options.
We do also offer our base powder here. It contains all of the vitamins and minerals in Keto Chow minus the protein powder, flavor, and sweetener. That way you can tailor it to your needs.
I’m a type 2 ..diabetic wannabe ..( I’m pretty diabetic )
Have lost 56 lbs since January 2020…I used to use Atkins shakes ( powder mix ) My cholesterol was also a little high on my last blood work .
Is this stuff ok for me to use ? I was told by a dietician ..according to my metabolic profile ..that I do better if I drink my breakfast .
I also like a protein shake on between meals to curb hunger ( & keep from doing a sleeve of Pringle’s ?)
Regarding cholesterol on keto, having high total and/or high LDL cholesterol numbers does not indicate a higher risk of cardiovascular disease, especially if you are a woman. The best resource I can direct you to to get more information on what I mean by that is http://cholesterolcode.com/
That should’ve been Pre-diabetic .. not pretty .. ?
How many calories per day were you getting when you did the 100 days of only KetoChow?
Looks like Chris was shooting for his normal 2000 calories/day. You can read more about his 100 days of Keto Chow here https://old.ketochow.xyz/series/100-days-of-keto-chow/
