Keto Chow

Invite to participate in the 2018 “Complete Food” Survey

Keto Chow was originally (and still is!) designed to be nutritionally complete, that’s one of the core fundamentals. I wanted something I could eat without having to worry about getting some weird vitamin or mineral deficiency so it’s set up to give you at least 1/3 of your daily nutrients in each meal. Do you have to eat 3 a day? Absolutely not, but you can if you are so inclined. There are other “Complete Foods” – most are in Europe and only a very small minority are designed for a ketogenic lifestyle (like Keto Chow).

About once a year, there’s a survey sent out to find out more about how people are using the complete foods/future foods – we’ve agreed to promote the survey that Queal is doing right now. So, if you want to head over and answer some questions about Keto Chow, please do!

More info about the survey and last year’s data can be found on https://completefoodsurvey.com/

To get the nutrition info I made a recipe in cron-o-meter, which is what we prefer for tracking your food. Cookies and Cream 2.1.1 Now in Stock!

We just received a new shipment of Cookies and Cream 21 meal bags. Interestingly, this shipment is the first v2.1.1 Keto Chow we’ve gotten (we switched protein to one that doesn’t have sunflower lecithin and tastes a tiny bit better, Chris is the only one that can tell the difference).

Eggnog 21 meal packs are currently in packaging and should be arriving Monday or so with Pumpkin Spice Caramel later that week or the week after.

Natural Strawberry (sweetened with monk fruit) now available in the 21 meal bags

We actually got the Natural Strawberry yesterday but I didn’t have a chance to do a blog post about it then, didn’t want the weekend to pass without making the official announcement!  The smaller samples came in earlier this week and now we have the large 21 meal “week” bags. The Natural Strawberry is the same flavor and everything else as our regular Strawberry but it uses pure monk fruit as the sweetener instead of pure sucralose. We tested using monk fruit on all of the new flavors but the additional expense and difference in taste made us decide to start smaller and see how it goes.

Chocolate Toffee and (most of) the 2.1 Samples are now available!

This entry is part 121 of 131 in the series Ketogenic Diet

We actually got in Chocolate Toffee this morning but didn’t do an announcement until we had the samples in-hand and available so we could announce both at the same time (otherwise people who wanted both would have ordered just the Toffee and then been frustrated to have to do another other and get them combined, this is easier =)

So without further delay: we now have available the Chocolate Toffee (21 meal bag) plus we also have the individual samples of all the flavors except Chocolate Peanut Butter (there was a problem running it, they’re running it through the mixer again and we will try it at the next available slot in a week or two),  and lastly we the new variety bundle: Sample the New Things. The original sample bundle will be coming just as soon as we get the Chocolate Peanut Butter samples.

Using Keto Chow while camping, hiking, traveling, etc…

I have people asking for solutions they can use for doing keto while camping, hiking, staying in a hotel (with or without refrigeration), or otherwise traveling. I thought I’d share some of my recent experience. The headline image above is from when I was making Keto Chow for 2 of my kids and my wife.

July 2018 has been a little crazy for me; with Keto Con, a 4 day-30 mile hike, family vacation, scout camp, Ketofest, and Low Carb USA all strung together. Particularly challenging was the hike, and later the scout camp with my oldest son since I wouldn’t have any refrigeration nor anything resembling a kitchen. The camp also wanted $6 a meal for amazing dishes like spaghetti, or grilled cheese sandwiches. My plan for the days I would be at camp was to bring:

They did have lots of clean, cold, mountain spring water available. The basic routine every meal went like this:

  1. I would grab my dry blender bottle.
  2. I’d put in the amount of avocado oil I wanted, it was marked on the side of the blender bottle with a marker to make measuring super easy.
  3. Add a scoop of Keto Chow powder.
  4. Add the water.
  5. Shake it up – from step 3 to step 5 you want to minimize time as much as possible to avoid clumps, try to hit fewer than 5 seconds.
  6. Go help some kid with something for 5 minutes (this lets the protein dissolve more so it’s not gritty).
  7. Drink
  8. Use the soap, water, and bottle brush to wash out the bottle – this is easier with hot water but I’ve used cold without problems.
  9. Leave the lid off and let the bottle dry.
  10. You’re ready for the next meal.

In the cases that I had access to refrigeration, using heavy cream was also an option instead of avocado oil. That entire sequence (steps 1-10) only takes maybe 5 minutes, not counting however long you take to drink the meal and it’s super handy when it’s raining but you already have your Keto Chow in your tent with you

So, there you go – a week’s worth of Keto Chow weighs around 1000g with 21 meals worth of avocado oil clocking in around 2000g (about a half gallon worth). Provided you have access to water, you can stick to a strict Ketogenic diet easily (oh and depending on the flavor you get, your net carbs for the DAY will be around 1.5-4g (more for chocolate compared to salted caramel and the others).

Snickerdoodle and Chocolate Mint Keto Chow 2.1 now available

To recap: the plan® for Keto Chow 2.1 was to get the 8 original flavors and launch right into the 10 new flavors in a specific order, with Chocolate Mint last because we had to revise it to get a stronger chocolate and a stronger mint flavor. We’re apparently completely off plan now: The Chocolate Mint is here and available. Snickerdoodle has also arrived. The last time we had Chocolate Mint was almost exactly two years ago in July 2016 – right about when we were launching Keto Chow 1.5. Snickerdoodle hasn’t been around since the transition to 2.0 about a year and a half ago.

Anyway, We have over 1000 of each so there’s plenty for everyone to get their fix!

New Keto Chow Fasting Drops, update on 2.1 roll-out: samples and new flavors

I’m very happy to announce a new product: Keto Chow Fasting Drops. It’s a concentrated electrolyte solution made from Utah’s Great Salt Lake (just to the North of where we’re located!). When you are fasting, it’s exceptionally important to keep your electrolyte levels up. Most people will use different forms of salt with sea salt being a good choice due to the additional trace minerals it contains. Problem is: using even a high-quality sea salt, you are only mostly getting sodium with almost no potassium or magnesium. Fasting Drops are high in magnesium and potassium, with a good level of sodium too.

  • NO sugars, calories, caffeine or artificial ingredients
  • Safe for hydration packs. Will not stain or leave a residue
  • Allows for flexible dosing – at the recommended dose, most do not detect any flavor, those doing fasting will often do 3-4x dose.

For those sensitive to the mineral flavor, add lemon or lime juice.  it comes in two sizes:

  1. The small “Pocket Flask” with enough concentrate for 2.5 gallons of water
  2. The large 250ml/8.3 oz “Refill” size with enough concentrate for 25 gallons of water, plus it also includes a free empty Pocket Flask bottle!

Now, on to the Keto Chow 2.1 status update! The powder to make all the samples for all 18 flavors is nearly done being made and will shortly be on the way to the place that does the packaging. The best estimate we have is that the sample packaging will start sometime around June 19-22, which is unfortunate because it means it’ll happen AFTER KetoCon =(. If the samples do indeed go into production as planned, I expect we will have samples of all 18 flavors arriving just before the end of June.

The large bags of the new flavors will come in over a month or so with Savory Chicken Soup likely arriving in early June, with the remaining flavors coming in according to the schedule.
